The Elevation Method

Creating Remarkable Spaces

In the realm of landscape construction, proper planning and clear expectations serve as the foundation for success. The importance of meticulous planning cannot be overstated, as it ensures that every aspect of the project aligns with the desired vision and goals.

If you're undertaking a landscape project, we've created a six step methodology you can use to ensure a great result:

01. Define

The first step in landscape design is to clearly define your vision and purpose for the space. Ask yourself what you want to achieve with the design—is it to create a tranquil retreat, an entertaining area, or a functional garden? Consider the specific needs and desires of the space’s users. This step sets the foundation for the entire design process.

02. Survey

Next, thoroughly assess the site where the landscape design will be implemented. Study the topography, soil quality, drainage patterns, and existing vegetation. Take note of any architectural elements or focal points that need to be considered. This assessment will help you understand the site’s strengths, limitations, and unique features that can be incorporated into the design.

03.  Create a Narrative and Layout

Based on the vision, purpose, and site assessment, develop a narrative and layout for the landscape. Consider the overall theme, style, and desired atmosphere. Create a layout that considers functional areas, such as seating, pathways, and plant beds. Strive for a harmonious balance between softscape (plants, trees, flowers) and hardscape (patios, decks, walkways) elements.

04. Specify

With the concept and layout in place, it’s time to select the specific plants, materials, and features that will bring the design to life. Choose plants that are suitable for the local climate and consider factors like sun exposure, water requirements, and maintenance needs. Select appropriate materials for hardscape elements, such as stone, wood, or concrete, keeping in mind durability and aesthetic appeal. Decide on additional features like water features, lighting, or seating options that enhance the functionality and beauty of the space.

05. Plans

Once all the items are specified and agreed upon. Create the necessary build plans:

• Grading + Drainage• Materials + Layout

• Construction Details• Irrigation

• Planting• Lighting

Submit documents for city and HOA approval as needed. Make revisions as required and obtain approvals prior to mobilization.

06. Build

The final step is to implement the design and bring it into reality. Prepare the site by clearing unwanted vegetation, grading the land, and installing necessary irrigation, conduit, and gas line systems. Create forms and boundaries for hardscape elements, like patios, walkways, and retaining walls, followed by softscape features. Connect all the irrigation, gas, audio, and lighting features. Finish with final grade, planter toppings, removing all debris and spoilage. Delivering a visually stunning and remarkable landscape.
